St. George smiled on us as we arrived at the South Winchester Golf Club. Dave Jones and Peter Rowlands had travelled down the M3 in pouring rain, which had passed eastwards through the Winchester area over breakfast-time. We played 18 holes in pleasant sun, with each of us finishing in the clubhouse with a rosy glow.
I like the South Winchester course. It sits off to the left of the Winchester-Romsey Road, just past Oliver's Battery. It is only in its second decade of existence, but was superbly landscaped during construction, resulting in long-driving fairways and plenty of features to snare the wayward shot, including lakes and ponds.
After an initial entry of 18 players, we dwindled down to 13 on the day due to various maladies ranging from a burst appendix (Bill Wingate) to the dreaded work. One, who shall be nameless just failed to turn up! I'm pleased to report that Bill Wingate is out of Southampton General, is recovering well and is hoping to be able to swing a club at the Autumn meeting in October.
We were delighted to see two new faces this time round. Ken Paterson, an ex-DTels member, who plays off 15, and Mike Balchin, who has only recently taken the game up and was playing his first game on a full-sized course. He enjoyed it and the camaraderie so much that he took the pains to telephone me to thank us all for a super day. The regulars will not be surprised to read that Pete Thompson walked away with all the awards. His winning score was 32 Stableford points, which gives an indication of the degree of difficulty of the course, and he also plopped the ball nearest the pin on the 6th and delivered the longest drive on the 16th. He was a worthy winner of the Stuart Dyos golden ball trophy!
Our thanks go to Brian Salkeld for arranging the day and, along with the South Winchester Golf Club, for hosting the competition. The NTLPA Autumn meeting will be on the Hampshire Golf Club course just south of Andover in October. The details to be announced nearer the date
