Report from Sam Roberts
The NTLPA Autumn Golf Meet - Thursday 4th October 2007 held at the Dunwood Manor Course, Romsey
I have been told by our erudite Newsletter editor that my golf reports are boring and that the accompanying photographs all look the same! Mind you, he speaks as a non-golfer and, I suspect, suffers from ‘golfphobia’. This was borne out by my acceding to his request to explain to lay readers of the Newsletter how the Stableford scoring system works – a simple explanation which exceeded his span of attention by some100 words and was hence rejected! I would hope that the website readers are more discerning.
However, to the matter in hand; the autumn golf meeting. Chris Allerton hosted the day’s golf on the beautiful Dunwood Manor course to the north-west of Romsey. It was a still day with wall-to-wall sun interspersed with the odd small cumulus cloud. Perfect for golf! Thirteen contenders battled the course – all eager to prove their prowess to their old friends and peers from IBA/NTL days. Perfect for golf! Without fail, over a bevvy and meal at the ‘nineteenth hole’, all agreed that it had been a super day. Individuals admitted to varying degrees of success with their clubs and some were accused of having the luck of the devil! Perfect for golf!
I won’t give a blow by blow account as Gordon’s attention span will be waning having read this far. Suffice it to say that the defending champion, Mike Leonard, handed the perpetual trophy to Pete Thompson, who managed a brilliant 38 points off a 10 handicap (if only my Stableford explanation had been accepted, you would all understand the significance of this feat). Mike however won the prize for the longest drive and Dave Manuel the prize for nearest the pin (this was on the 18th par 3 hole; a drive off the top of a hill to the green way below – very satisfying). Various other prizes went to Bill Wingate, Dennis Fowler, Ken Aldus and me (I pipped Dave Cowans into third place overall on count-back, both being on 30 points).
It was a pleasure to welcome two new faces to the biannual competition; Barry Lycett and Bill Wingate. Hopefully there will be more at the spring meeting next April, which will be held on the South Winchester course.
