The NTLPA Spring Golf Meet - Tuesday, 25 April 2006
Mike Leonard was this year’s Spring meet organiser and we enjoyed a pleasant day’s golf and banter at his club, the Royal Winchester. The weather was fine and this superb course (founded in 1888) presented us with some challenging golf, as well as some beautiful scenery as we played in the hilly area bounded by Chilbolton Avenue, Sarum Road Hospital, Teg Down Mead and Farley Mount.
For varied reasons, the number of participants was not as high as on previous meetings. Due to sojourns abroad, we were down to 15 players up to the last week before the day (25 April). Then we had a couple of ‘sickies’ at the last minute and one member went AWOL and did not appear at all! We played four three-ball games in the end.
After a bacon sarnie snack or, in the case of a couple of our members, a full-size cottage pie, in the well appointed club-house, the first three-ball teed off at 1 p.m. from the raised first tee, which looks down onto a left to right sloping fairway, with the inevitable bunkers down on the right hand side. As in most cases, when faced with a new course, once the first hole is over and done with, you can relax and enjoy the day.
The longest drive prize went to Mike Leonard, with Pete Thompson a close second. Mike Holt won the nearest the pin competition on the penultimate green and was also runner up in the overall Stableford competition with 36 points. The winner for the day, and the new holder of the Brass Ball trophy, was Mike Leonard with 37 points (local course knowledge helps!).
Those taking part were:- Chris Allerton, Bill Hartley, Mike Holt, Dave Jones, Mike Leonard, Terry Long, David Manuel, Sam Roberts, Peter Rowlands (guest of Dave Jones), Brian Salkeld, Pete Thompson and Brian Woods.
Ann Dean, who could not make this meet, has offered to host the Autumn Golf Meeting at her club, the Test Valley Golf Club (between Overton and Micheldever). A date of Thursday 12th October has been entered in the Club diary. We could do with more participants. If you are a golfer of any handicap or ability, please contact me on 01264 365662.
